BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSUs Darrel Williams didnt remotely generate the recruiting hype of fellow freshman running back Leonard Fournette. For now, though, Williams is producing more points for the 10th-ranked Tigers. Williams ran for two touchdowns, Fournette added a score of his own, and LSU posted its second-straight shutout, 31-0 over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night. Williams scored the Tigers first two touchdowns, first on a tackle-breaking, 22-yard run, then on a 1-yard score early in the third quarter. On both plays, he was lined up as a fullback. Fournette scored from 24 yards out and Kenny Hilliard added a short scoring run for LSU (3-0) early in the fourth quarter, giving him three TDs in as many games. ULM (2-1) kept the game close for one half, but the Warhawks defence eventually wore down while their offence managed just 93 total yards and six first downs against a Tigers defence that has been in suffocating form since second half of their season opening comeback victory over Wisconsin. LSU, which beat Sam Houston State 56-0 a week earlier, has not allowed a point since yielding a touchdown early in the third quarter against the Badgers. While the Tigers only got credit for one sack against ULM, they forced numerous rushed and errant throws by Warhawks quarterback Pete Thomas, who finished 16 of 30 for 77 yards -- just one week after hed passed for 384 yards and two scores against Idaho. Tigers quarterback Anthony Jennings was 11 of 18 for 139 yards and was intercepted for the first time this season late in the first half. As usual, he had his most success throwing to Travin Dural. The pair hooked up for a 32-yard gain that set up Williams short TD. Dural played less than a week after a car accident that forced him to miss a couple practices with stitches in his forehead. He finished with six catches for 79 yards, but was held out of the end zone for the first time this season. LSUs defence allowed only 44 yards in the opening half, when ULM managed only two first downs on offensive plays and crossed midfield only once. That took pressure off of a Tigers offence that was a little slow to get going against the Warhawks, whose defence is loaded with experience and gave little ground early on. The Tigers needed three possessions just to take a 3-0 lead on Colby Dellahoussayes 21-yard field goal. LSU went up 10-0 early in the second quarter when Williams bounced off tacklers at the line of scrimmage and broke into the open for his 22-yard score. LSU wound up with 202 total yards in the opening half, but one scoring chance evaporated when ULMs Mitch Lane made a diving interception on the Warhawks 14, keeping the Warhawks within 10 points at halftime. Amarista celebrated his 25th birthday by delivering a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday. "I was happy," Amarista said. "Instead of me getting gifts from my teammates, I gave a gift to the team. After all that we went through this series, to get a W the way we did and come through on my birthday is something Im not going to forget." Will Venable and Tommy Medica singled with one out in the seventh. Nathan Eovaldi was able to get Yasmani Grandal to ground out before Amarista came to plate. Batting for pitcher Ian Kennedy, Amarista drove the ball over the right-field wall on the ninth pitch of the at-bat for a 3-1 lead. "Hes a little guy, but hes got a little sock on the pull side," Padres manager Bud Black said. Amarista, a centre fielder, was held out of the starting lineup, but came through when he got his chance. "Some guys were giving me a hard time, you always play a guy on his birthday," Black said. "We didnt start him, but he sort of showed me I guess." Kennedy (1-1) was sharp, using his fastball and curveball as he allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He struck out five before exiting in favour of Amarista. "Its a good birthday gift for him," Kennedy said. "If he does that every single time, thats pretty awesome." Four relievers then helped the Padres end a four-game losing streak, including two against the Marlins to begin the series. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his second save. "No doubt it was a good win. You hate to leave on a loss, especially a sweep,"; Black said.dddddddddddd. Eovaldi (1-1) held the Padres scoreless through six. Eovaldi struck out eight, which tied a career high. "I definitely didnt see that coming," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Eovaldi pitched a great game and deserved better than that, but sometimes thats the way it goes." The Marlins completed their opening homestand with a 5-2 record. "The goal is to try to win every series and we were able to do that," Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee said. "We had a chance to go for a sweep today. We had our chances, but now we have to go on the road and try to keep the momentum going." Miami got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with Jeff Bakers pinch-hit RBI double. San Diegos Yonder Alonso had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to extend the lead to 4-2. It was the first time this season San Diego had scored at least four runs in a game. "No doubt weve got to get the bats going," Black said. "Ive said that repeatedly over the last three to four days. You look at some of those averages and theyre obviously a little low. We need those guys to start getting some hits." Giancarlo Stanton pushed his RBI total to 12 in the fourth with a base hit to drive in Christian Yelich, who tripled to lead off the inning.
