LAS VEGAS, Nev. - UFC newcomer Cody (No Love) Garbrandt knocked out bantamweight Marcus (The Bama Beast) Brimage with 10 seconds remaining in an all-action fight Saturday night on the undercard of UFC 182.Garbrandt, who went 32-1 as an amateur boxer, floored Brimage (7-4) with a left and a right in the third-latest stoppage of a three-round UFC bantamweight fight. The main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena featured the light-heavyweight title grudge match between champion Jon (Bones) Jones and Daniel (DC) Cormier.Garbrandt (6-0) becomes the ninth fighter from the Team Alpha Male camp in Sacramento to earn a UFC win. The gym is home to bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former WEC title-holder Urijah (The California Kid) Faber. The 23-year-old Garbrandt, a slight underdog, absorbed two kicks to the groin in the first round. But he rallied to wobble Brimage as the first round ended, saying later he thought he broke his right hand in the round. The second started with both fighters throwing plenty of punches in a back-and-forth round that saw Garbrandt drops his hands and egg Brimage on. Get your hands up, yelled Garbrandts corner. The third was more of the same as the two 135-pounders chased each other around the cage with bad intentions. Brimage pushed the pace and paid for it as Garbrandt tagged him and eventually put him away.Four of Garbrandts previous five fights ended in the first round and he has yet to go the distance, although he came close Saturday.Unbeaten Paul (The Irish Dragon) Felder closed out the undercard in spectacular fashion by knocking out veteran lightweight Danny (Last Call) Castillo, another Team Alpha Male fighter, with a spinning back fist at 2:09 of the second round. As Castillo (17-8) launched a kick, Felder (10-0) turned away and then kept revolving to throw the spinning back fist. Castillo fell backwards and eventually had to helped onto his stool.Felder, from Philadelphia, won a split decision over Canadian Jason Saggo last time out in Halifax. He was slated to fight later this month in Boston but stepped up to face Felder after Rustam Khabilov withdrew through injury. He looked razor-sharp in handling Castillo, whose UFC record fell to 7-5Lightweight Evan Dunham (15-6) lived up to his 6-1 odds by punishing Brazils Rodrigo Damm with strikes en route to a unanimous 30-27 decision. Damm (12-9) slapped himself several times in the dying moments of the fight, as if to say Dunhams punches were not hurting him. But the blood on his face told a different story. At the end of the third round I knew I was behind on the judges scorecards so I tried to taunt Evan into an exchange, Damm explained later. Both men badly needed a win. Dunham had lost three straight while Damm, a former world champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, had lost his last two.Former LSU fullback Shawn (The Savage) Jordan, a six-foot load at 261 pounds, knocked out UFC newcomer Jared (Tha Killa Gorilla) Cannonier at 2:57 of the first round and then defied gravity by doing a backflip in the cage. Jordan felled Cannonier (7-1) with a right to the back of the head and then finished him off with strikes on the ground.I would really like to fight someone whos ranked higher than me next, Jordan said. Its time for me to start climbing the ladder. The 30-year-old Cannonier, whose day job is repairing air traffic control equipment for the Federal Aviation Administration in Anchorage, took two months off work to prepare for the fight, raising more than $6,000 through gofundme.com to pay for his Arizona training camp.At 235 pounds, Cannonier was giving up 26 pounds. He did well until Jordan (17-6) caught him.Russian welterweight Omari Akhmedov (14-2) spoiled Mat Nilssons debut at welterweight, taking a unanimous 29-28 decision over the Danish-based Swede. Akhmedov slowed as the fight progressed and Nilsson (11-4-1), a former world champion grappler, was trying to lock up a Darce choke when the fight ended.Bantamweight Marion (The Belizean Bruiser) Reneau, a hard-nosed high school teacher making her UFC debut at the age of 37, used her superior striking skills to bloody up Alexis (Sneaky Zebra) Dufresne (5-2) en route to a lopsided unanimous (30-26, 30-26, 30-25) decision.Whos next? UEFA said Wednesday that the champions of England and France only have to include five home-trained players in their 21-man squads next season instead of the expected eight. Only one of the five players needs to be trained by the club itself.11) If you dont think Derek Jeter was all that great, ask this question: "Whos the next long-time major leaguer to receive a big farewell"? Youll struggle to find a good answer, I think. Albert Pujols? David Ortiz? Ichiro Suzuki? Theyve got numbers that Jeter couldnt dream of, but Jeter had that certain something that no one else of his generation possessed, and however else you describe it, thats what justified the season-long fanfare.12) With good reason, the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings have received plenty of criticism for the way they handled the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson affairs, but where football is concerned, is it okay to point out that theyve gone about their business on the field without being distracted?13) Do you need 16 games every week to make the NFL as good as it can be? No, but when bye weeks start to occur, the level of interest can go down a bit. Week 4 gave byes to Seattle, Denver and, as it turns out, the only remaining unbeaten teams, Cincinnati and Arizona. In Week 5, Miami and Oakland will rest. They wont be missed as much. 14) The Houston Astros wanted to sit second baseman Jose Altuve on the last day of the season to protect his .340 average and ensure his American League batting title. Altuve wanted to play. Who should have made the decision? Altuve, of course. And who made the right decision? Altuve, who had two hits and finished at .341. The Astros get to market his batting title, but they have to do it in the face of social media criticism that they should have seen coming.15) Somewhat similarly, the Pittsburgh Pirates faced a dilemma in their 162nd game. Still alive with a slim chance at the NL Central Division title, they could have pitched Gerrit Cole against Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto or saved Cole for the likelihood of a start in the wild card game against the Giants. A clubhouse meeting decidded they should play to win with Cole.dddddddddddd The Pirates lost. Can you rip the Astros for wanting to bench Altuve and criticize the Pirates for using Cole? I think so.16) And one more - would Jeter have been criticized if he had not played in any of the Yankees last three games at Fenway Park? Yes, probably. But who would dispute the idea that his career should have ended with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning against Baltimore at Yankee Stadium? Especially as he finished with a pair of infield singles against the Red Sox, there was no way to top the last home game and he neednt have tried. 17) As Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock continues to insist that his contract status is no big deal, why does it continue to get attention? Because maybe it is a big deal? Right, until it definitely isnt.18) Never mind debatable issues, Im looking for a question that is bound to produce a unanimous answer. How about: "Were you surprised that the Boston Bruins released Ville Leino from his training camp tryout?"19) If nothing but ability mattered, would Munenori Kawasaki have a place on the Blue Jays roster for 2015? No. But because a lot of other things like versatility and enthusiasm combine with the ability he does possess to make Kawasaki the Jays most popular player, with teammates and fans, he almost certainly stays in Toronto.20) Among several ex-Blue Jays with a shot at a 2014 World Series ring, the most prominent is likely to be Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth. Free of charge, heres a trivia question you may use: "Of current major leaguers with at least 25 at-bats against LA Dodgers pitching ace Clayton Kershaw, who has had the most success?" And the answer happens to be: Jayson Werth with a .346 batting average that includes two homers. So there you go, for what its worth/werth. ' ' '
